Post No. 118: For the 234th Birthday of the United States of America

Between All Of Us
(Or, "An Independence Day Poem")

All of God's creation is joyfully,
gloriously, and so abundantly,
standing between all of us.

The love of God for this great
country of ours is proudly
blooming between all of us.

America's amber waves of grain,
and her fruited plains, are forever
unfolding between all of us.

The Constitution is a binding
testament to the liberty that
lives between all of us.

Our Founding Fathers' balanced,
hard, and proud, accomplishments
breath freely between all of us.

The Liberty Bell silently peels
truly, faithfully, and incredibly
deeply between all of us.

The Statue of Liberty keeps
her flame of freedom burning
brightly between all of us.

The Washington Monument
rises above the fear of change for
some of those between all of us.

The Lincoln Memorial speaks
quietly of the peaceful patriotism
that exists between all of us.

Old Glory herself is waving loud
and proud for the love of America
that thrives between all of us.

And only our great love for this
wonderful country of ours could
ever come between all of us.

So, let us all pledge our allegiance
to the one nation under God
that stands between all of us.

My Poetic Notes:

The reason that I wrote this poem can be summed up with the following statement: "Happy 234th Birthday, America!"

Just so you know, I revised this poem, as I often do with my writing! And I changed how this poem was written on July 3rd, 2023 after I sent it to someone in an email who had said to me, "Have a Happy 4th of July," and I said back to them, "Happy 4th of July to you too!" Thus, after my signature, I said, "P.S.: Here is an Independence Day poem that I wrote a few years ago!" So, I wanted to show you how this poem used to be written, before I revised it as above.

And it used to be written like this:

Between All Of Us
(Or, "An Independence Day Poem")

All of God's creation is joyfully,
gloriously, and so abundantly,
standing Between All Of Us.

The love of God for this great
country of ours is proudly
blooming Between All Of Us.

America's amber waves of grain,
and her fruited plains, are forever
unfolding Between All Of Us.

The Constitution is a binding
testament to the liberty that
lives Between All Of Us.

Our Founding Fathers' balanced,
hard, and proud, accomplishments
breath freely Between All Of Us.

The Liberty Bell silently peels
truly, faithfully, and so very
deeply, Between All Of Us.

The Statue of Liberty keeps
her flame of freedom burning
brightly Between All Of Us.

The Washington Monument
rises above the fear of change for
some of those Between All Of Us.

The Lincoln Memorial speaks
quietly of the peaceful patriotism
that exists Between All Of Us.

Old Glory herself is waving loud
and proud for the love of America
that thrives Between All Of Us.

And only our great love for
this wonderful country could
ever come Between All Of Us.

So, let us all pledge our allegiance
to the one nation under God
that stands Between All Of Us.

Thus, I revised this poem to be written as it is above.

And this poem was also published on my "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" blog (please see the hyperlink below for the blog), since I feel that the message in this poem applies to the message that I am trying to convey through "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer."

This poem was written in Portland, Oregon.

The United States Of America Co-Opted
Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" From Russia
(A Patriotic Apologetic Poem)

"The Year 1812 Solemn Overture, Op. 49"
(popularly known as the '1812 Overture')
was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky—
68 years later in 1880—to commemorate
Russia's successful defense in 1812 of
Moscow against France's invading "Grande
Armee" under Napoleon Bonaparte!

And the United States of America
co-opted the '1812 Overture' for
the musical accompaniment to
our Independence Day (or, the
"4th of July") fireworks, as if the
brilliant Russian classical work
of music was ours and not theirs!

Therefore, in order to 'sum it up,'
on behalf of the entire United
States of America, I would like to
apologize profusely to the entire
Russian Federation for America having
co-opted their inspiring '1812 Overture!'

Happy Independence Day!
(Or, "A '4th of July' Poem")

God's Creation in its totality is perfect.

The United States of America
within God's Creation is imperfect.

Since July 4th, 1776, this "Great
Experiment in Democracy has
been a 'melting pot' of immigrants
from other countries...

...For example, some immigrants,
who came from England, invaded
Native American lands—and
committed genocide of the Native
American people—in order to gain
independence from Great Britain
(which is the basis of the
Independence Day, or the
"4th of July" celebration)...

...And other immigrants who came
from Africa, were forced to come
to America as slaves, which was
the cause of the Civil War (and
which is the basis of the "Juneteenth"
celebration, when African-American
slaves were notified, in Texas, by Union
General Gordon Granger on June 19th,
1865—two years after the Emancipation
Proclamation of January 1st, 1863—
that they had been freed)...

...And African-Americans are
still treated as if they are slaves
because they are actively exploited,
marginalized and even killed by the
'white masters of slavery' (which is
the basis of the "Black Lives Matter"
movement that began in 2013)...

...Therefore, if Americans wish to
create "A More Perfect Union," then
we need to stop thinking, feeling
and acting as if we are more perfect
than the totality of God's Creation.

More Unites Us Than Divides Us!
(Or, "An Independence Day Poem")

We all have our differences—of that there is no doubt—
as we are a deeply divided country with seemingly no out!

However, the history of our country is not made out of
whole cloth, since it is much more like a patchwork quilt,
with all of its many flaws, variety and colorful vibrance.

So, it is true that more invites us than derides us!
And that is why more unites us than divides us!

Let us dutifully remember the rebellious beginning of our
multicultural democracy, since our founders rejected the
cruel rule of a tyrannical king and his oppressive army.

So, it is true that more invites us than derides us!
And that is why more unites us than divides us!

This is the reason our nation is similar to blended metals,
such as bronze, brass, or steel, which can be much better
than pure metals, because we are a lot stronger together.

So, it is true that more invites us than derides us!
And that is why more unites us than divides us!

For, our nation was not created out of one similar kind
of people, from only one land, but out of a lot of different
kinds of people, from many lands, who became one people.

So, it is true that more invites us than derides us!
And that is why more unites us than divides us!

That is why "e pluribus unum" (which is Latin for
"out of many, one") was written on the Great Seal of
the United States, as a theme and motto for America.

And there is much more that can be said—which is totally
true—about the diversified unity of the red, white and blue!

July 4th, 2022 Update, Written On July 1st, 2022 (Originally From My Blog Post Titled, "My Point Of View On...Giving Charity And Accepting Charity," Which Is On Both Of My "Paul Whiting — Math Magician" And "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" Blogs): Happy Independence Day, everyone!

In celebration of Independence Day (which is usually more informally referred to as the 'Fourth of July'—or sometimes the '4th of July'—in the United States of America), I signed a 'Fourth of July' card today, July 1st, 2022, from the USO (United Service Organizations) in order to include our brave men and women in uniform in my '4th of July' celebrations.

You see, while we are celebrating 246 years of the United States of America, "we cannot forget the service members who continue to sacrifice so much to defend the freedoms our forefathers fought for."

And I was notified about this Independence Day card yesterday, June 30th, 2022, via an email from the USO with the subject line, "Before July 4, will you join me in thanking our troops?" that was written by [name redacted], "who is the highest-grossing box office star of all time," which stated the following:

Paul,

I've had the honor of visiting with over 5,500 of our brave service members in Kuwait, Turkey, Qatar and Afghanistan alongside the USO, and this much is certain: No superhero on the big screen can stack up against these real-life heroes in uniform.

While it's not always possible for us to thank our troops in person, I know how much it means to this community of military supporters to send them love and gratitude from home — especially ahead of important moments like July 4. That's why I hope you'll join me in thanking our service members today:

I'm helping the USO collect at least 100,000 signatures in support of our military heroes before July 4, so please, will you add your name now to thank our service members who sacrifice so much for our freedom all year long?

SIGN THE CARD***

Many of us are looking forward to a weekend filled with fireworks and barbeques with our family and friends, but we can't forget about the service members who will be thousands of miles away from their loved ones — deployed in dangerous conditions to make sure we can celebrate holidays like July 4 back home.

I've seen firsthand how much messages of support and appreciation mean to our troops, and it only takes a moment to say thank you. Please, can I count on you to sign the thank-you card now for our service members in honor of their sacrifice? It's the least we can do for the heroes who selflessly do so much for us.

Thank you for all you do to support our service members — today and every day.

Plus, after I signed the card, I made a one-time donation on the USO.org website to say to our service members, "Happy Fourth of July to all the brave troops serving at home and abroad! Today and every day, we truly appreciate everything you do to protect our country."

In addition to that, I already make a recurring monthly donation to the USO in order to show my support for our U.S. Military Personnel! You see, I usually make one-time donations to the USO each month—as often as I can manage when they request a donation via email or text message. Therefore, I am planning to continue making one-time donations to the USO in the future, as often as I can manage to make donations, in addition to making the aforementioned recurring monthly donation.

By the way, did you know that the USO is a not-for-profit organization and not part of the Department of Defense (DoD)? The following description of the USO is from their 'About Us' webpage:

"The USO is not part of the federal government. A congressionally chartered, private organization, the USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities, and is powered by a family of volunteers to accomplish our mission of connection."

So, that is why I 'volunteer financially' as a member of the "USO Home Team" through a recurring monthly donation, as well as through one-time donations to the USO each month!

July 4th, 2023 Update, Written On July 2nd, 2023 (Originally From My Blog Post Titled, "My Point Of View On...Giving Charity And Accepting Charity," Which Is On Both Of My "Paul Whiting — Math Magician" And "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" Blogs): In celebration of Independence Day (which is usually more informally referred to as the 'Fourth of July'—or sometimes the '4th of July'—in the United States of America), I signed a 'Fourth of July' card today, July 2nd, 2023, from the USO (United Service Organizations) in order to include our brave men and women in uniform in my '4th of July' celebrations.

You see, while we are celebrating 247 years of the United States of America, "we’re showing up to support our brave military heroes and let them know how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make to protect us and our freedoms."

And I was notified about this Independence Day card today, July 2nd, 2023, via an email from the USO with the subject line, "This July 4, join me and thank the heroes defending our country" that was written by [name redacted], "who is the highest-grossing box office star of all time," which stated the following:

Paul,

I've been lucky enough to join the USO for several tours and events and meet thousands of our brave service members. It's such an emotional experience each time to listen to their stories and personally thank them for their service and their immense sacrifices.

I know there are many moments in the line of duty where these heroes need a reminder that they are appreciated — when they're facing danger and uncertainty, stationed in unfamiliar places far from home or missing holidays with loved ones.

That's why, this Fourth of July, I hope you'll join me in thanking our service members: I'm helping the USO collect at least 100,000 signatures on a special July 4th thank-you card to honor our heroes, so please, will you add your name next to mine now to thank the troops sacrificing so much to protect our freedom?

SIGN THE CARD***

Whether I'm shaking hands with troops on the ground or connecting with them virtually around the world, I know a quick expression of thanks goes a long way to boost their morale and strengthen their resiliency. It's the least we can do, Paul, to honor those who volunteer to keep us safe and free back home.

So please, before you go out to celebrate our country with family and friends this Fourth of July, can I count on you to be one of the 100,000 signers via email and text messages to thank all the troops sacrificing so much for us? Sign the card now to honor these courageous heroes.

Thank you so much. Happy Fourth of July!

October 24th, 2023 Update No. 7 [My Writing About How I Have Changed The Way That I Label My Blog Posts 'Updates' For Any Additional 'Updates' That I Write, After The First 'Update,' By Using A Simple Numbering System, Which Starts With The First 'Update' (Originally From My Blog Post Titled, "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was," Which Is On My "Poet, Artist and Philosopher" Blog)]:

I have changed the way I label the blog post 'updates' that I write because I oftentimes write more than one 'update' per day!

And in the past, I have labeled the second, third, fourth and fifth 'update' with the following extensions—on the days that I write more than 'update'—to differentiate any additional 'updates' from the first one, as follows:

[1st] Month Day, Year Update
[2nd] Month Day, Year Update—Continued
[3rd] Month Day, Year Update—Continued Further
[4th] Month Day, Year Update—Continued Further Some More
[5th] Month Day, Year Update—Continued Further Some More Than Before

However today, October 24th, 2023, I actually had more than five 'updates' to write, so I decided to change how I differentiate any additional 'updates,' from the first 'update,' by using a simple numbering system, which actually starts with the first 'update' that I write, as follows:

Month Day, Year Update No. 1
Month Day, Year Update No. 2
Month Day, Year Update No. 3
Month Day, Year Update No. 4
Month Day, Year Update No. 5
Month Day, Year Update No. 6
Month Day, Year Update No. 7

Therefore, that is why this 'update' is the seventh one for today! –Paul Whiting (written October 24th, 2023 and revised October 28th, 2023)

In celebration of Independence Day (which is usually more informally referred to as the 'Fourth of July'—or sometimes the '4th of July'—in the United States of America), I did a Google search for "4th of July USO" and found the following USO (United Service Organizations) search result regarding the 'Fourth of July':

SIGN THE CARD

---------------------------------------------

Thanks for signing the card! Will you take a few minutes to complete a quick survey about supporting all of our nation's heroes?

From scorching deserts in Iraqi summers to frozen mountaintops in Afghan winters, our troops endure harsh conditions to keep folks like us safe. How important is it to you to support our service members deployed far from home?

[✓] Extremely important
[  ] Very important
[  ] Somewhat important
[  ] Not at all important

The USO gives our service members the support they need to keep their spirits up, from phone calls home to A-list entertainment. Do you think it's important to keep troops' morale high by letting them know patriotic Americans back home stand with them?

[✓] Yes
[  ] No

Hundreds of thousands of service members are currently deployed overseas, putting themselves in harm's way in dangerous combat zones like Iraq and Afghanistan. Have you or a family member or friend ever served in the military?

[✓] Yes
[  ] No

Our service members make incredible sacrifices to keep us safe, missing special moments like the first day of school or a baby's first steps while deployed far from home. How important do you think it is to help our troops stay connected to family back home during deployment?

[✓] Extremely important
[  ] Important
[  ] Somewhat important
[  ] Not at all important

A Navy lieutenant commander recently told us that USO Care Packages are a "constant reminder to those of us out 'in the sandbox' that we are not forgotten and folks back home actually care."

Now, as we work to deliver our brave service members a touch of home, we need to ask for your support.

It takes a lot of time, coordination and money to get our care packages to more than 175,000 service members who are away from their families, sacrificing so much defending our freedoms. The USO is not a government agency — we rely on the generosity and patriotism of citizens like you.

But right now, we're falling short of our goal, and time is running out. Will you donate today to help the USO keep our service members connected to the family, home and country they protect? We'll send you a free American- made T-shirt you can wear to show your support for our troops!

[  ] Yes, I'll donate $29 or more. Send me a T-shirt!
[✓] Yes, I'll donate but don't want a T-shirt!
[  ] No, I don't want to donate to support our service members today.

---------------------------------------------

Help Connect our Heroes to Home

It takes a lot of time, coordination and money to get our core packages and other essentials to more than 200,000 service members who are away from their families, sacrificing so much defending our freedoms.

Will you please donate by MIDNIGHT tonight to send a little bit of home to our service members and show them how thankful you are?

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

[  ] $29
[  ] $49
[  ] $100
[  ] $250
[  ] $500
[  ] $1,000
[  ] $1,500
[✓] $14.00

And so, I signed the USO 4th of July card in order to "show our brave military heroes how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make to protect our freedom." Plus, after I signed the card, I made a one-time donation on the USO.org website to say to our troops, "Happy Fourth of July! Thank you for everything you do to protect our freedom and keep us safe."

November 6th, 2024 Update No. 1 [My Writing About No Longer Being An 'Online Activist' In Any Way, Shape Or Form]: Due to Donald Trump winning the 2024 Presidential Election—and until further notice—I am no longer being an 'Online Activist' in any way, shape or form, which includes no longer signing petitions from political, social, environmental and charitable organizations, and no longer sending letters to my Representative and Senators in Congress, as well as no longer making donations to political, social, environmental and charitable causes. Full stop! I am also unsubscribing from any of the emails that I used to receive from political, social, environmental and charitable organizations. In fact, I am even cancelling all of my monthly political donations to the main Democratic fundraising and coordinating organizations, as well as to the USO (United Service Organizations), in addition to cancelling all of my monthly news organization subscriptions, or news organization donations, because I am absolutely terrified of this second Trump administration. And I fully expect that democracy in America as we know it will be over! So, I am choosing to not engage in any 'activism' whatsoever—plus, I am not even sure that I will be exercising my 'civic duty' by voting in any upcoming elections because, as a (formerly) donating and a (potentially former) voting Democrat, I totally fear the retribution of President Donald J. Trump. Full stop!

P.S.: It's July 31st, 2025, and I feel like I need to provide an addendum (that is, "an item of additional material added at the end of a book or document, typically in order to correct, clarify, or supplement something") to this November 6th, 2024 'update!'

You see, a couple of days ago, on July 29th, 2025, I copied the text of this update to use as my reason for unsubscribing from a particular political email that I received that same day!

And so, I actually bothered to read this update—in order to verify that it made sense for me to use as a response to the request on this political email's unsubscribe page which stated, "Please tell us why you are leaving"—during which I realized there was a typo (that is, 'a typographical error') in the text of the update, as I have highlighted below, with the correction in brackets:

"And I fully expect that democracy in America as we know [it] will be over!"

Thus, I accidentally left out the word "it" in the sentence above. Hence, I corrected said typo on July 29th, the verification of which can be seen reflected in the addition of the date "revised July 29th, 2025" after my name.

However, as I got to thinking about the fact that I had originally said I may not be voting in any upcoming elections, I realized that, in fact, I did vote in Portland Oregon's Multnomah County Special District Election on May 20th, 2025, just like I usually do! [I always vote in every election (even 'special elections') and I always vote Democrat, which is why I was worried about voting in any upcoming elections given President Trump's clear disdain for Democrats.]

Therefore, I decided to write this "P.S." today, July 31st, as a way to clarify that I am still voting in elections (even 'special elections'), it's just that I am no longer engaging in any 'Online Activism,' during Trump's Presidency, as I explained in great detail above. (I hope that makes sense!)

–Paul Whiting (written November 6th, 2024, revised November 7th, 2024, revised July 29th, 2025 and revised July 31st, 2025)

Blogger's Note: This is a follow-up to my 'November 6th, 2024 Update No. 1 [My Writing About No Longer Being An 'Online Activist' In Any Way, Shape Or Form]' that is located on my blog post "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was," which can be found on my "Poet, Artist and Philosopher" blog. And that update stated, in part, the following:

"Due to Donald Trump winning the 2024 Presidential Election—and until further notice—I am no longer being an 'Online Activist' in any way, shape or form, which includes no longer signing petitions from political, social, environmental and charitable organizations, and no longer sending letters to my Representative and Senators in Congress, as well as no longer making donations to political, social, environmental and charitable causes. Full stop! I am also unsubscribing from any of the emails that I used to receive from political, social, environmental and charitable organizations. In fact, I am even cancelling all of my monthly political donations to the main Democratic fundraising and coordinating organizations, as well as to the USO (United Service Organizations), in addition to cancelling all of my monthly news organization subscriptions, or news organization donations, because I am absolutely terrified of this second Trump administration. ..."

You see, I have restarted donating to organizations which support the U.S. Military, including the USO (United Service Organizations)—that I restarted donating to as of April 16th, 2026—which supports our Active Duty Personnel, as well as Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), and Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), in addition to Wounded Warrior Project (WWP)—that I restarted donating to as of May 25th, 2026—all of which support our Military Veterans.

So, for the complete updates (with any corresponding ‘My Writing About...’) regarding these restarted donations, please see my blog post titled, "My Point Of View On...Giving Charity And Accepting Charity," which can be found on both of my "Paul Whiting — Math Magician" and "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" blogs, within which you can do a find-in-page search for the updates listed below by their label names (or, by their corresponding ‘My Writing About...' titles, where applicable).

These are the updates regarding my restarted donations to the USO on April 16th, 2026:

April 16th, 2026 Update No. 1 (Follow-Up No. 1, Written On April 17th, 2026) [My Writing About How I Restarted Donating To The USO (United Service Organizations) As Of April 2026]

April 16th, 2026 Update No. 1 (Follow-Up No. 4, Written On June 15th, 2026, Which Also Discusses June 14th, 2026)

Theses are the updates regarding my restarted donations to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), and to Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), as well as to Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), respectively, on May 25th, 2026:

May 25th, 2026 Update No. 3, Written On May 26th, 2026

May 25th, 2026 Update No. 4, Written On May 27th, 2026, Which Also Discusses May 2026

May 25th, 2026 Update No. 5, Written On May 27th, 2026

Now, to clarify something: I would normally also refer you to my blog post titled, "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was," which can be found on my "Poet, Artist and Philosopher" blog, for these blog post updates (and for the corresponding ‘My Writing About…’, where applicable), but I cannot edit this post anymore—for an unknown reason—as of May 11th, 2026. So, any editing that I have tried to do on this blog post, after May 11th, for some reason won't save...

…Although, on June 20th, 2026, I thought to relocate all of the 2026 updates from my original blog post, "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was," to my newer "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was, Part 2." You see, I had created that 'Part 2' blog post as a backup post, because there was a period of time when the original blog post kept being unpublished by Blogger for being too 'spammy'—I am guessing because of all the hyperlinks that I was providing for news articles that I was referring to my readers!

Anyway, that relocation of the 2026 updates seemed to have worked in getting the original blog post to be "editable" again, at least temporarily... But, then, later on that same day, I tried to add some additional text to the post and it would not save again! However, at least this time, instead of just saying that the "Update failed," it specifically stated, "The body is too large." Thus, I am assuming the 'unknown reason' that I stopped being able to edit the post on May 11th was because I had—apparently—reached some sort of blog post size threshold!

(So now, I am thinking of editing out most of the news updates, which I wrote on that original post, because those updates weren't nearly as pertinent to my "Online Activism" as was responding to the text message, email, and regular mail communications that I was receiving from various political, progressive and charitable organizations.)

In conclusion, then: for the complete updates (with any corresponding ‘My Writing About...’) regarding these restarted donations, I can now refer you to my blog post titled, "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was, Part 2,” which can be found on my "Poet, Artist and Philosopher" blog, in addition to the above-mentioned blog post titled, "My Point Of View On...Giving Charity And Accepting Charity," which can be found on both of my "Paul Whiting — Math Magician" and "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" blogs.

July 4th, 2026 Update No. 1, Written On February 14th, 2026, February 16th, 2026, February 17th, 2026, March 3rd, 2026, June 2nd, 2026, June 28th, 2026, July 1st, 2026 And July 3rd, 2026 (Originally From My Blog Post Titled, "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was, Part 2," Which Is On My "Poet, Artist and Philosopher" Blog):

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

The following is actually my second poem with the alternative title, "An Independence Day Poem." And my first alternatively titled "An Independence Day Poem" was written for the 234th Birthday of the United States of America on July 4th, 2010. The main title of that poem is "Between All Of Us."

By the way, If you wish to read that first "An Independence Day Poem," please see my blog post titled, "For the 234th Birthday of the United States of America," which can be found on my "Small All White in the Forest — Poet" blog, as well as on my blog post titled, "For Democracy, Part 4 — The Birthday of the United States of America," which can be found on my "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" blog.

And I actually started writing this new "An Independence Day Poem" on February 14th, 2026—Valentine's Day—which is when I first thought of the title, "More Unites Us Than Divides Us," since this title is taken from a statement that I have heard repeatedly in the news about how deeply divided our country is these days, during this politically turbulent time.

You see, when I am writing, I will often first think of a title, which conveys what I am planning to eventually say in a poem, before I have even written one word of that poem. However, at other times, I think of all the words in a poem first, and then I will think of a title later on, sometimes even based upon some of the words in the poem.

In addition to that, even though I originally wrote this poem as an 'update' to the above-mentioned blog posts regarding my poem for the 234th birthday of America, I decided to publish it July 4th, 2026, as a blog post on all of my blogs—despite the fact that I have not published any new blog posts since December 31st, 2022—because I felt that the message in this poem was really important to help unite our divided country!

Thus, I decided to write this new poem "More Unites Us Than Divides Us" for the 250th Birthday of the United States of America, on July 4th, 2026, with the alternative title, "An Independence Day Poem," as follows:

July 4th, 2026 Update No. 2, Written On July 5th, 2026, Which Also Discusses July 3rd, 2026 (Originally From My Blog Post Titled, "My Point Of View On...Giving Charity And Accepting Charity," Which Is On Both Of My "Paul Whiting — Math Magician" And "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" Blogs):

Happy Independence Day, everyone! I recently received two communications from the USO (United Service Organizations).

And the first communication, which I received on July 3rd, 2026, was a mailer from the USO, with a 'front teaser message' on the envelope that read as follows:

Special CHALLENGE CAMPAIGN Inside

[Business name redacted]
challenges you to join
them today in support
of our heroes.

And an additional 'back teaser message' has with the following text:

Please scan the QR code or visit uso.org/givetoday to donate online.

https://give.uso.org/page/R607_july1

URGENT DEADLINE
Please reply by August 15, 2026

And the mailer above stated the following:

[I used to hand-type the text of the documents from these types of mailers on my smartphone; however, it takes a lot of time and energy in order to hand-type these kinds of documents: so, instead, I scanned and copied the documents using Google Lens! Then, I edited the copy of said documents to include all of the italicizing, bolding and/or underscoring where applicable.]

★★★ USO ★★★
FOR THE PEOPLE WHO SERVE.™

Paul,
Our friends at [business name redacted] are challenging supporters like YOU to join together and raise additional funds for our heroic troops by August 15.

Dear Mr. Whiting,

More than 200,000 Americans are currently serving overseas.

They do so in environments that can change in an instant, often under intense pressure and far from home. Their commitment does not waver — and neither should our resolve to support them. I firmly believe that standing behind our nation's service members is a responsibility we all share.

That's why I want to personally thank you for your recent gift of $7 on 10/30/2024. Your commitment helps ensure that service members and their families are never forgotten, no matter where duty takes them.

[Blogger's Note: The above referenced "gift of $7 on 10/30/2024" was the last donation that I made to the USO in October 2024, as explained in my 'October 30th, 2024 Update No. 1, Which Also Discusses October 26th, 2024.' Please see my blog post titled, "I Am No Longer Being An Activist In The Same Way That I Was," which can be found on my "Poet, Artist and Philosopher" blog, as well as my blog post titled, "My Point Of View On...Giving Charity And Accepting Charity," which can be found on both of my "Paul Whiting — Math Magician" and "Paul Whiting — A Creative Writer" blogs, within which you can do a find-in-page search for the 'update' labeled, "October 30th, 2024 Update No. 1, Which Also Discusses October 26th, 2024"]

I also wanted you to be among the first to hear this important news.

Our longtime partners at [business name redacted] have generously committed $50,000 to support our troops through new USO programs and Center operations. They have issued a challenge to supporters like you to match that gift dollar for dollar by August 15, raising an additional $50,000 to further strengthen the USO's mission.

Meeting this challenge means expanding the reach of the USO — ensuring we can continue to support service members wherever they serve by keeping them connected to family, home and country.

Mr. Whiting, I'm reaching out to you today as someone who cares about our military to ask you to do two things:

First, I hope you will take a moment to sign the enclosed Thank You for Your Service card and return it in the postage paid envelope provided. I will make sure your message reaches service members serving in places like Somalia, South Korea, Iraq, Kuwait and other locations where a note from home can mean more than words can express.

Then, I ask that you consider sending a gift of $10, $15, $20 or whatever you feel is most meaningful to help us meet this challenge. Your support will help provide vital services — including in forward and remote locations where conditions can make it difficult to operate traditional USO centers — ensuring morale and connection remain strong for those on the front lines.

You can count on the USO to use your gift, along with [business name redacted] generous contribution, wisely and responsibly. Thanks to supporters like you, we operate more than 260 USO locations worldwide, offering service members a place of comfort, a friendly face and a reminder that their service matters.

Your generosity helps make possible free phone calls, WiFi and video chats home — simple connections that strengthen families and sustain morale, even from thousands of miles away.

As you know, the USO is not a government agency. We rely entirely on donors like you who believe in standing with those who serve. With partners like you and [business name redacted], we are able to meet that responsibility.

Thank you for all you do to support America's service members and their families.

For the People Who Serve,

[Name redacted]
Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, Retired
[Title redacted], USO

P.S. Please consider sending your best gift by August 15 to help meet the [business name redacted] Challenge. Your support makes a real difference for the men and women who serve — and for that, we are truly grateful.

GIVE ONLINE uso.org/givetoday

https://give.uso.org/page/R607_july1

Your generous gift may not be matched if we reach the maximum match amount before receiving it, in which case, your important contribution will be used where it is needed most to strengthen the well-being of the people serving in America's military and their families.

-Your friends at the USO

In addition to that, I already make a recurring monthly donation to the USO in order to show my support for our U.S. Military Personnel! You see, I usually make one-time donations to the USO—as often as I can manage when they request a donation via regular mail, email or text message. (I also donate for particular calendar observances, such as Independence Day!) Therefore, I am planning to continue making one-time donations to the USO in the future, as often as I can manage, in addition to making the aforementioned recurring monthly donation.

So, that is why I 'volunteer financially' as a member of the "USO Home Team" through a recurring monthly donation, as well as through one-time donations to the USO!

And the second communication, which I received on, July 4th, 2026, was a text message from the USO, which stated the following:

Paul, on America’s 250th birthday, honor the heroes past and present who have made our freedoms possible. 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗮 𝟰𝗫-𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 to help the USO provide meals and other critical programs for our troops. This 4X match is for a limited time. Donate now:***

"A USO Photo Essay of 4th of July Celebrations Through Time" from the USO

Thursday, Jul 2, 2026

On July 4, 2026, the United States of America will celebrate 250 years of American independence. Each July, we gather to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and to celebrate how far we have come as a nation.

And we would not be here without the people whose service carries America forward.

As we attend our 4th of July BBQs, service members around the globe will carry on their missions, continuing to defend the freedoms we declared more than two centuries ago. We, as the USO, stand proudly beside them – offering support and a celebration of America’s birthday at bases and USO Centers around the globe.

And so, I made a one-time donation on the USO.org website in order to support the USO's following statement: "Long hours. Missed holidays. Months away from the people they love. That's the reality of service, and it doesn't stop for this milestone. Send a message of gratitude and the USO will deliver it directly to service members at centers and on installations worldwide. This toast is for them."

Then, after I made said donation, I received an email from the USO on July 4th, 2026, with the subject line, "Thank You for Your Donation to the USO", which stated the following:

★★★ USO ★★★

[Picture of "a soldier kneeling to embrace a child in an airport setting, conveying a message of reunion and support, with the USO logo on the left."]

Thank you for your generous $5.00 USD donation!

Your gift honors the service and sacrifice our troops make for us every day and will provide comfort and support to them and their families.

If you have any questions or would like to contact the USO, please call [phone number redacted].

So, that is why I 'volunteer financially' as a member of the "USO Home Team" through a recurring monthly donation, as well as through one-time donations to the USO! –Paul Whiting (written July 5th, 2026 and revised July 6th, 2026)

I received a text message on July 4th, 2026 from Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), which stated the following:

From Team WWP: Paul, today we honor 250 years of freedom — and 250 years of sacrifice.

Wounded warriors gave so much to make this moment possible. And today is your chance to give back with 2X the impact.

Please DONATE BY MIDNIGHT so [business name redacted] can match your Independence Day gift $1-for-$1 up to $250K.***

And, after I read the text message above, I clicked on the hyperlink to the referenced webpage, the relevant text of which can be found below:
